Daniel Ruiz was victorious in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup race that was held at Assen. This was the second Red Bull Moto GP Rookies Cup for the 18 year-old Spaniard who was awarded the win in the steward’s room following the penalizing of Danny Kent who overtook Ruiz in the last corner as a yellow flag was being waved. Harry Stafford took third place, which was his first trip to the Rookie podium.
The drama that came as a result of the race revision was not anything in comparison the racing action that took place down on the track, as seven racers provided an exciting sixteen lap event that was just as exciting as Friday’s clashfest. Alex Kristiansson, the Swedish sixteen year-old got off to the best start from and had a couple of bike lengths lead as he the racers hurled around the first lap.
However, Kristiansson was not to keep that advantage as Ruiz and Kent both battled it out for the front position, as the pole man, Hiura suffered some bad beginning laps dropping him back to 10th place before he could fight his way back to the leaders in the race.
However, though valiant effort was made by Hiura, he suffered misfortune with six laps left in the race when his fuel line came off. This also caused Kristiansson to lose the pack as he had to slow down due to Hiura’s mishap.
With a lap and a half to go it was Ruiz that jumped out to a half second advantage, with Kent hot on his tail. As it came down to the final corner, Kent made a good racing move, not seeing the yellow flag, as he moved ahead of Ruiz at the finish line, only to give up the victory in a race revision.
