2010 RIMS Canada Conference: Gateway to Excellence to Address Best Practices in Every Corner of Industry

New York, August 26, 2010 — The Risk and Insurance Management Society, Inc.’s Northern Alberta Chapter will host the annual RIMS Canada Conference at Shaw Conference Centre, September 26-29, 2010 in Edmonton, Alberta. Captives, climate change and risk financing will be just a few of the many topics covered in the 29 sessions covering critical risk management issues in Canada.

“Edmonton, Alberta represents one of Canada’s premier metropolitan destinations and we are thrilled that the city is host to this year’s RIMS Canada Conference,” says David Buzzeo, RIMS Canada Conference organizing committee co-chair and senior manager of risk management operations for Alberta Finance and Enterprise. “The remarkable venue combined with a content rich program is sure to provide attendees with a memorable and inspiring experience.”

In its 36th year, RIMS Canada Conference attracts more than 1,500 risk and insurance professionals at all experience levels, business executives with risk management interests, brokers, insurers and service providers for the ultimate educational and networking experience. The three-day event offers keynote presentations, special events and an expansive Exhibit Hall.

“This year’s RIMS Canada Conference has been developed around key commitments to emerging technology, innovation, solutions, best practices and risk management excellence,” says Gwen Tassone, CRM, CIP, RIMS Canada Conference organizing committee co-chair and risk and insurance manager for the City of St. Albert. “We have crafted our sessions around these central points and are confident that they will equip attendees to expand their skill sets and add more value to their organizations than ever before.”

Plenary Speakers
The conference features keynote presentations from the world’s top authorities on leadership and business strategy, including:

Sir Salman Rushdie
Controversial, provocative, and celebrated, British-Indian writer Salman Rushdie is uniquely qualified to address the subject of risk as he has clashed with many political leaders throughout his career. He has received most of the world’s top literary prizes and in 1997 he received a knighthood for his services to literature.

Leonard Brody
A tech entrepreneur, venture capitalist and author (Innovation Nation), Calgary-born Leonard Brody, at just 39, has already been involved in the building and financing or sale of five companies. He was part of the initial executive of Onvia Canada, voted the country’s top startup. A Queens University and Osgoode Hall law graduate, Brody co-founded NowPublic.com, a pioneer of user-generated news named by Time magazine as one of the best 50 websites in the world. He currently presides over the Clarity Digital Group, which oversees one of the largest online news conglomerates.

Jeff Rubin
Canadian economist and energy expert Jeff Rubin came to prominence in the early 1990s with his accurate prediction of a decline in Ontario real estate prices. In 2000, as an encore, he foresaw rising oil prices. A McGill University graduate and a former chief bean counter with CIBC, Rubin believes oil prices – not sub-prime lending – are responsible for the current financial crisis, a theory he expands in his best-selling book Why Your World is About to Get a Whole Lot Smaller.

Dr. Mark Jaccard
Dr. Jaccard has been a professor in the School of Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, since 1986 – interrupted from 1992-97 while he served as Chair and CEO of the British Columbia Utilities Commission. His PhD is from the Energy Economics and Policy Institute at the University of Grenoble. Internationally, Mark is known for his work on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (Nobel Peace Prize in 2007), the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (co-chair of task force on sustainable use of coal), and the Global Energy Assessment (convening lead author for sustainable energy policy). In 2006, his book, Sustainable Fossil Fuels, won the prestigious Donner Prize for policy.

Peter Mansbridge
Last year, Peter Mansbridge, recipient of 12 Geminis, became the only Canadian TV journalist to have had a sit-down interview with a working U.S. president – Barack Obama. Mansbridge anchors CBC’s flagship newscast, The National, and hosts Mansbridge One-on-One. He has been a Fellow at Yale and has lectured at Oxford.

Networking Events
There will be a number of networking and fundraising opportunities for risk practitioners during the conference, including the McGannon Foundation Pre-Conference Golf Tournament and McGannon Foundation Fun Run/Walk. Additionally, the Exhibit Hall will feature more than 70 providers, offering the latest in products and services for the risk management profession, including insurers, claims services, disaster recovery, brokers and much more.
